Nigerian Afropop star Yemi Alade shared her beauty secrets on Vogue, where mostly American actresses, musicians, and models come on to share their skincare and makeup routines.
The “Johnny” singer started off washing with black soap and moisturizing while being her humourous and real self. Yemi Alade proceeded to advertise Nigerian products throughout the Vogue video.
She also talks about her career in music. Alade confessed that she considered singing a hobby and just “went with the tides” into fame.
Alade expressed that when she became famous, she began to feel responsible for a lot of people.
When you think of Nigerian songstresses that have gone international; you have to admit that Yemi Alade is probably not the first name that comes to mind.
But when it comes to what non-Nigerians and non-Africans perceive as African music, Yemi Alade is a pretty big deal.
Alade is by no means the best at showing off the vocal skills she so greatly possesses. She isn’t very politically or socially vocal either. Yet, she has branded herself as Mama Africa, a token for inclusivity.
Her self-branding as Mama Africa has increased the reach of her music, as well as scored her a collaboration with American rapper Rick Ross and an endorsement from Luc Belaire.
With lustrous hair that always curls skywards, her down-to-earth personality, and an amazing PR team; Yemi Alade has carved a pan-African niche for herself that is quite admirable.
By far the best part of the video was Yemi Alade’s sassy exit, swaying her hips and saying goodbye in French; assuring the young African girls that they don’t have to change who they are to get where they want to go.
