Y2K fashion is a thing now., in case you missed the memo. Early 2000 fashion trends – from the low waist bell-bottoms to baby pink crop tees – has made a comeback in 2021.

This fashion trend was both iconic and tragic, as there were many y2k “fashionistas” who gave…nothing on the red carpet.

In Hollywood, the faces of this trend varied from Britney Spears with the crop tops, to Christina Aguilera with the low-waist pants. Women undoubtedly ruled this era, giving us some of the most iconic red carpet looks.

Y2K didn’t just rule the red carpet fashion. This fashion trend had a high influenced in the music and film industry as well. Noting Regina George‘s flare skirt outfits from the movie Mean Girls, and Elle Woods‘ pink dresses from Legally Blonde as some iconic fashion pieces in movies.

Nollywood stars like Genevieve, Tonto Dikeh and Jim Iyke were fashion icons back in the day. Often referred to as the “golden era” of Nollywood, Nollywood y2k has also influenced pop culture in many ways.

Nollywood y2k aesthetic

Popularized by Gen Z tiktokers, this early 2000 trend is back in a big way. Thrifting, recycling and revamping clothes formerly worn by your parents or aunts and uncles in the early 2000s is a thing now. Gen Z has found a way to make them look even better by adding little twists to it.

Y2K is now more than just a fashion trend – it is often referred to as a statement, an aesthetic, and a culture. Not all this trend has made it to the future, as many weren’t so great. However, modern day twists of the early 2000 fashion trend has made this aesthetic a want for many Gen Zers.
