Wizkid bags MTV awards nomination for ‘Brown Skin Girl’

Multiple award-winning international Nigerian music sensation, Ayo Balogun aka Wizkid is set to bring home yet another award. Wizkid is nominated alongside, music legend, Beyonce Knowles who featured him on the track. Also featured on the song were, Saint JHN and Beyonce’s daughter, Blue Ivy.

Wizkid has also won numerous awards for the collaboration. He won the 2021 Grammy Awards for Best Music Video earlier in the year. The song also won two Soul Train Awards and the BET Awards. The official Twitter handle of the MTV awards posted a congratulatory message on the award.

Other nominees in the category are, ‘Wildest Dreams’ from the Netflix series, Bridgeton, ‘Agatha All Along‘ from the movie, ‘WandaVision’, among others. The category generally features iconic and popular moments attached to a song. The song ‘Brown Skin Girl‘ is one of the biggest songs on Beyonce’s 2020 ‘Black Is King‘ album.

The Black is King album featured many African creatives, performers and musicians. The Brown Skin Girl video was directed by Nigerian-British director, Jenn Nkiru. The 90-minute album also featured singer, Yemi Alade, Ghana’s Shatta Wale and Cameroon’s Santiel.

A Nigerian grandmother also got a special feature in two videos off the album. 69-year-old Mojisola Odegbami had a cameo in the videos for Bigger and Mood 4 Eva. Odegbami was elegantly dressed in the video in iro and buba complimented with gele.

Through, an interesting turn of events, Odegbami was able to visit the set of the filming of the album. She visited often enough to get noticed. She had been staying with her daughter’s friend whose son was the main character in the album. The album also featured Tiwa Savage, Burna Boy, Maleek Berry, Mr. Eazi among other acts from Africa.

However, the album drew some criticism. Beyonce was accused of appropriation and using the African culture for profit. On the other hand, some others praised her for putting Nigerian creatives on the global scale,
