Why the 2019 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was Cancelled

It’s a tough time for world famous lingerie brand, Victoria’s Secret. After 23 years of thrilling their fans, the lingerie brand is cancelling its annual fashion show. Ever since the news, one question has loomed. Why is the show not happening this year?

The fashion show which was launched in 1995 sunk to its lowest ratings of all time last year. It also drew criticism on the gender focus, outdated style and lack of diversity on the runway.

In May, it was reported that the organizers were rethinking the annual fashion show and decided that network television was no longer “the right fit.”

Stuart B. Burgdoerfer, executive vice president of Victoria’s Secret parent company, L Brands explained the reason behind the move. He said;

We think it’s important to evolve the marketing of Victoria’s Secret. It was a very important part of the brand-building of this business. And was an important aspect of the brand and a remarkable marketing achievement. There will be more to come as that continues to get evaluated.

We will be communicating to customers, but nothing similar in magnitude to the fashion show.”

In July, longtime Victoria’s Secret model Shanina Shaik also told a newspaper that the show had been cancelled. In her words;

It’s something i’m not used to because every year around this time, I’m training like an angel. But I’m sure in the future something will happen, which I’m pretty sure about.”

Sadly, the lingerie brand may no longer be seen as the arbiter of sexiness it once was.
