Highlife band, The Cavemen, in an interview with Guardian Life, said the music genre is depth in simplicity, which why they ventured into it.
“We believe in depth in simplicity. So, highlife in the face of it is simple, but the whole idea behind it is very complicated. It represents what we stand for as Cavemen, and it is definitely what we listened to. We have experiences that suit highlife,” Kingsley, a member of the group was quoted as saying.
When asked how they started music, Ben, the lead singer of the highlife band, responded: “We have been playing since; I have been playing drums since I was 2. Kingsley has been playing music since he was 3 or 4; the bond is strong.”
On his part, Kingsley added: “It started from the church. We definitely didn’t train anywhere else; it was just all our experiences.”
Talking about how they came up with the group name (The Cavemen), Kingsley explained that “it comes from a place of purity and self-discovery. I was in Kano Law School and away from civilization.
“So, I definitely felt like I was in something; I chose to call it the Cave. I came to Lagos and I told my brother about it. So, we decided to stick with the name. There are a lot of characteristics associated with the name ‘Cavemen’ – the creativity in the midst of nothing; the purity; the primitiveness; the colours; everything! There is a particular youthful spirit to the cavemen.”
