Since Marvel announced their upcoming movie, The Eternals, fans have been discussing one particular issue.
Why have the Eternals, this super powered beings who have lived on Earth from the beginning of time never helped the other Marvel superheroes when the world faced imminent doom? During both Avengers: Endgame and Infinty War, the Marvel heroes had to fight against extraterrestrial threats to keep the rest of humanity safe.
These questions have now finally been answered by the movie’s Oscar-winning director, Chloe Zhao. While speaking to Total Film, Zhao was asked about the relationship the Eternals have with Earth. She explained that they were specifically instructed not to interfere by the Celestials themselves.
The Celestials are powerful extraterrestrial cosmic beings.

Zhao said, “[The audience] will understand why. Not only why, but how complicated not interfering made them feel. We explore that. You’ll see that in the film. The Eternals were instructed not to interfere with any human conflict unless Deviants are involved. There’s a reason why that’s the case. And that was the instruction from the prime Celestial Arishem.”
The Eternals movie will take us back in time so we learn more about the Celestials. “What excited me is the idea of going back in time, and exploring [the time] before Thanos was born, before anyone was born,” Zhao says. “Where does the MCU go back in time? And that brings us to the mythology of the Celestials. Anything involving the Celestials is going to be at a huge scale level of complication, let’s put it that way.”
The Eternals are coming to the big screen on Friday November 5, 2021.
