What I went through while I was with Psquare- May D

May D, Nigerian Afropop singer has narrated his bitter experience with the defunct Psquare group.

This comes after Cynthia Morgan recounted how she lost everything she made from music to Jude Engees” Okoye of the defunct P-Square group due to the contract she signed with his record label ‘Northside Music Group’.

Narrating his ordeal with the label after a commenter tagged him ‘greedy’, May D, whose real name is Akinmayokun Awodumila, claimed that he never got paid for all he did for the music group, from writing songs, to his vocal input in their Invasion album. He wrote:

“For your information I was staying in their boys squatters with their driver and their cook just one room all of us shared a toilet and I had big songs and also the other side of their twin duplex was empty! Now! I slept on brand new television carton used my shirt as cover cloth.”

May D’s Exit From Square Records

In August 2012, May D announced his split from Square Records and announced his own label, Confam Entertainment. Announcing his exit Jude Okoye had said, “… MAY D is no longer an artiste under the aforementioned outfits due to irreconcilable differences. We at Northside and Square records wish him all the best in his career and life”.

However, in January 2013, Jude Okoye said in an interview: “We sign in artistes as our way of giving back to the society. And by the time they become known, we let them be. However when May D came in, he wanted more than that, he wanted to be Psquare; a name that we have struggled to be build for years…”

On his part, May D who recently released an EP titled, May Day said that Square Records of now-defunct music duo, Psquare never believed in him, which was a reason for their fallout.

According to him, they never believed he could make waves as a musician in the industry. And as a result, they were only willing to help him with their platform without a contract.
