What Defines a Classic Movie -Moses Babatope

Moses Babatope, the Group Executive Director and Managing Director of the Filmhouse Cinemas and FilmOne Entertainment, in a chat with eelive.ng, argued the elements that defines a movie.

According to him, for a movie to be classic, it must have an appealing spectacle, scale, and intentional storyline.

“Not every film will have spectacle, not every film will have scale but if  you need to stand out. You need to have spectacle, you need to have scale, you need to be deliberate about the story you want to sell that people can instantly connect to,” he argued.

When asked if he thinks Nollywood is in the right direction in relation to the movie elements he mentioned, Babatope said: “I think we are getting to the level where the men are separated from the boys. And like I said, spectacle, scale, and relatable story-telling are what set films apart.”

Sharing his sentiment on filmmakers featuring reality TV stars in movies and snubbing professional actors for roles, Babatope said he understands why producers prefer to use reality TV stars instead of professional actors.

“Most times, they do it to sell a film. But it’s not everybody that cannot act; a lot of reality TV stars can act, they were acting before they went into reality TV shows, rather than acting to get noticed. I believe people do different things for different reasons, and to be honest, we have a lot of reality TV stars that have acted before the shows, and they are very talented and professional,” he added.
