Benson Idonije, the grandad of Afrofusion musician, Damini Ogulu professionally Burna Boy has said that the Grammy winner needs to “up his game” to win more of the golden statuette.
Idonije who once managed Afro beats legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti revealed this in a chat with Vanguard.
“There is what we call the art of staying on the top. Now that he has won the Grammy, he should continue to win more Grammys. To be able to win more awards, he has to up his game and sustain the tempo,” he said.
He also said that his grand son has the prospect of winning more Grammys and that what sets him apart from other musicians “in the country” is his “talent.”
Idonije had predicted after his grandson, lost the coveted ‘Best World Music Album’ award to Beninoise singer, Angélique Kidjo; at last year’s Grammy Awards that he would eventually bring home the award. He also said that Burna Boy’s nomination had given him a global recognition giving him a chance to win the award in future.
In his words, “I was very optimistic and hopeful that he would win but all the same. Burna Boy has not lost anything. He was nominated and recognised, so there’s still another chance and it’s possible that by next year, he would get it. This is only the beginning; I don’t feel bad because God’s time is the best.”
