Weird MC Talks Comeback, Collaboration With Teni

After over a decade away from the upper reaches of the music charts, Nigerian- British rapper and songwriter, Shola Idowu, better known as Weird MC, has revealed she’ll be releasing singles in 2021 alongside a short story.

The 50-year-old spoke on Channels TV’s Rubbin Minds with media personality, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu. She also expressed her interest to work with indigenous singer TeniolaTeniApata.

“It’s Teni o. I love Teni so much. It’s really funny but I love her sister as well. I like Niniola. It will be interesting to see if we do something together. Funke Akindele, I’ve loved her from day 1,” she said.

“I feel there’s so much happening in the industry right now. I can’t believe Nigerian artistes are now signing deals with Universal Music (UMG) and Sony Music. You’ve seen Burna Boy at the Grammys.”

Speaking on her forthcoming music projects, Weird MC said: “Single, yes. Definitely. We’re writing a short story that is going to come out this year by God’s grace. I was hanging out with Joke Jacobs and she was just giving words on things to do. So, fingers crossed,” the rapper added.

Weird MC is one of the few Nigerian female artistes associated with Afrobeat. After releasing I Wanna Make You Jack/Let’s Get Wet, she returned to Nigeria in 1996 and released the album Simply Weird, a blend of American hip hop and afrobeat. She also released the visuals for her single Allen-Avenue.

In 2006, Weird MC released her sophomore album, After Da Storm. It featured the single, Ijoya which was produced by Don Jazzy and JJC. The album earned her the Best Pop Album at the 2007 Headies, an AMEN award for Most Pop Song, a Channel O Music Video Award for Best Special Effect and several other awards.
