Jailed American movie producer, Harvey Weinstein, serving a prison sentence for sexual assault and rape, has tested positive of the coronavirus. This is according to head of the state corrections officer union.
Michael Powers, President of the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association said Weinstein, 68, has been placed in isolation at the Wende Correctional Facility, said .
According to Powers, he disclosed he learned the test came back positive on Sunday morning. Although, he is concerned about correction officers who lack proper protective equipment. “We have quarantined several staff,” Powers said.
Weinstein arrived at Wende Correctional Facility, a maximum surety prison east of Buffalo, New York, on Wednesday. He was formerly housed at New York City’s .
A New York criminal court sentenced him to 23 years in prison on March 11; for sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi and also Raping Jessica Mann, a onetime aspiring actress.
However, a lawyer for Weinstein said on Sunday night that his legal team has not been notified of the coronavirus diagnosis.
“Of course, we are concerned ,given Mr. Weinstein’s state of health. If this the case, we are vigilantly monitoring the situation,” said lawyer Imran Ansari, who is based in New York.
