Magic Carpet Studios, an animation and games studio in Lagos, is on the move to shake up the industry as they are currently working on their first 2D animation feature film. It is not just to be any film; it is a 2D animated adaptation Cyprian Ekwensi’s “The Passport of Mallam Ilia” – an African classic published in 1960.
Before the movie drops (pretty soon too), Magic Carpet Studios have put together a documentary detailing how the project started and came together.
This documentary titled “Journey to Mallam Ilia” features the discoveries made by some of the studio’s team members during one of their many research trips to Kano State where the book “The Passport of Mallam Ilia” was set. The documentary captures some interesting scenes like the Emir’s Palace, the museum and local areas.
“The Passport of Mallam Ilia” animated movie follows a tale of love and conquest, betrayal, and the search for revenge set in the 19th century. “The Passport of Mallam Ilia” captures the beauty and culture of Northern Nigeria in the pre-colonial era, a period devoid of terrorism, insecurity, poverty, and sectarian violence.
Di’ja and Sadiq Daba are some of the stars of the movie.
