Just a few days after Tiwa Savage and Seyi Shay went at it at a salon in Lagos, there has been another clash in the music industry; the Yoruba gospel music industry to be precise. Tope Alabi criticised Yinka Alaseyori over the lyrics of her song and this critique did not go down well.
Alaseyori’s song Oniduro Mi eseun o was one of the most played songs in its genre in 2020. The title translates to “my guarantor, I’m grateful”. But apparently, Alabi was not down with that as she thought the song was meaningless and not inspired by God. In a video making the rounds on social media, Tope Alabi said God isn’t her guarantor because He’s more than a guarantor.
Alabi, during a song ministration in a church, had said: “What kind of song is that? God is not my guarantor, he is more than a guarantor. Although I have tried to correct the singer (who isn’t the original composer) but she got angry. I loved that song but when I tried to sing it the Holy Spirit told me to shut up”.
According to Alabi, if Alaseyori wrote the song after being led by the Holy Spirit; she would understood God is more than a guarantor and would not refer to Him as such. “If the Holy Spirit brings it, you are supposed, to digest it, chew it and organise it, before bringing it out,” Alabi stated.
However, many concluded that Alabi’s criticism was coming from a place of envy; saying that she did not want to “share the spotlight”. The song, as well as, Alabi’s criticism of it, trended on social media and elicited reactions from fans and colleagues alike. Fellow gospel singer Sola Allyson even shared her own opinion on the matter.
Defending Yinka Alaseyori, Allyson said, “I commend Yinka for making the song more accessible to souls all over the world and I wish her more help in all her doings. The song tells the story of many of us who had no backing from anyone and none to rest on or be a hiding place as to what our tomorrow would have been.”
