Toby Grey: Female Musicians Suffer in Nigeria

Popular singer, Toby Grey has opened up on the challenges that female artistes like her face in the music industry.

In a recent interview with Punch, Grey revealed that the gender problem in the industry is mostly associated with investors who find it more lucrative to invest in male artistes.

She also lamented over the claim that females in the industry have to face a lot of criticism as a result of “feminine features” that have to meet “societal standards”.

Her Words: “The Nigerian music industry is very much male dominated. Most investors find it more lucrative to invest in male artistes.

“That is mostly because women in the industry have to cater to a lot of things (essential and expensive) that contribute to the overall brand/artiste image and not many investors are willing to take that route.

“That being established, a female artiste would struggle a lot if she does not have strong finances, compared to a male artiste that would not incur any costs relating to feminine essentials that ‘have to meet’ societal standards.”

The Show Glass crooner maintained that while it is rare for female musicians to find true investors, the few ones that show interest would demand “unnecessary advances” in return for favours.

“Women in the industry are often exposed to unnecessary and inappropriate advances from the opposite sex in return for favours. Those are some of the challenges that women have to deal with on a much larger scale than men,” she said.

Recall that last year (2019), music star Kizz Daniel offered to leverage Toby Grey’s musical career, after the release of a cover of Fvck You.
