For the past month, B’Concept Network Productions has been releasing a dramatised Bible web series titled The Ten Virgins. This modern take on the Christian parable is acted out in eight parts; six of which are available to watch on YouTube.
Like the Bible story, The Ten Virgins follows a group of 10 women and their journeys through their Christian faith. The series creates conversations about what we consider to be true Christianity and whether or not there should be a more liberal approach to faith. The Ten Virgins is symbolic and represents the relationship between Christ and the church universal.
The filmmaker, Blessing Egbe said in a statement that she is motivated to tell stories that reflect the everyday lives of people with lessons that would make the world a better place.
It also tackles issues that go silent in the Christian community; like pastors and spiritual leaders misusing their platform for sexual harassment and assault of female church-goers.
This has undoubtedly been a hot topic since mid-2019 when Busola Dakolo bravely accused COZA pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of raping her; corroborating other victims’ stories and inspiring many more women to name their abusers.
The Ten Virgins also uses musical devices to tell stories; particularly in a scene where they juxtaposed the traditional and the modern church using very different scores of the same song. It also takes into account the fact that staying faithful does not come easy and temptations are rife.
And while the acting is not masterful (as one can expect from a web mini-series); the message is clear and concise. Each episode is about 30 minutes long and the YouTube series will likely round up in a few days.
