The problem with finding true love in Nigeria: Billing culture and low self-esteem

Who is to blame for the inability of people to connect emotionally and build a worthwhile relationship in Nigeria? Is it the fault of the government for being unable to create an economy that allows people to acquire enough funds to express the romantic creativity at the back of their mind or we blame the lover who has an underwhelming self-esteem; hence, they do not know how to love beyond the capacity of their pockets?

These are rhetorical questions that would never reach an epiphany. It’s a vicious cycle that transcends generations; hence, individuals will only attain a peak in the ‘relationship’ scene before they decline.

This depends on age, environment, and ability to meet someone whom you truly care about. Over the years, I have heard people discuss how much they want to love and be loved; however, as soon as a potential lover or partner emerges, they are unable to execute the romantic gestures designed in their minds.

While the lover imagined taking their partner for a fine dining in Italy, they can only manage to eat boiled corn in front of the sea in Lagoon Front, Unilag, Lagos state. As the man promises the woman that tomorrow will be better than it is right now, the woman isn’t certain if the young man is trying to bamboozle her, a conflicting game of human nature.

As for the damsel who imagined that she had met with the love of her life, she submits her spirit, soul, and body to her monsieur, who is unsure about his future. In the end, she is often met with disappointment. Indeed, in the state of love and war, there are always casualties- those with broken hearts, those who never recover from trauma bonding, and the people who will walk through life shattered spirit.

Social media commentators and pundits have mentioned that love is a transaction in Nigeria. A lot of people are not in genuine relationships, they are only in it for heinous gains, reasons best known to them. There is the urge for the ‘finish line’ which people define as ‘marriage’, a lot of people want to settle down without creating a serene environment where their hearts would lay at night, instead they want the quick money, quickfire sex and, rapid inflation of egos.

They fail to nurture their respective nature or create fond memories together as the days go by. A lot of Nigerians are awaiting the perfect moment to express their love, instead of taking the initiative to build a healthy relationship as the moment presents itself, men wait to acquire funds, meanwhile, the women want a man who amassed the entirety of the world- jocular, a Siamese twins if you ask me.

Realistically, the government (through economic policies) affects how people express their innermost desires, absence of cash does limit the romantic prowess of lovers, however, it shouldn’t take away your ability to share love and give worthwhile experiences with your love interest.

In the end, every Nigerian deserves true love and happiness.
