In mid-2019, Tems burst into the scene with her modestly successful single, ‘Try Me’. The single quickly made the 29-year-old singer-songwriter noticeable and put her on the radar as one of the next breakout singers in the Nigerian music industry. She came into the scene alongside superstars such as Fireboy, Joeboy, Rema and the controversial recording artiste, Naira Marley.

2019 saw numerous burgeoning artistes break into the mainstream, however, Tems was perceived as the alternative musician, although she was talented, she wasn’t necessarily tipped to be the one who would first grab a Grammy award amongst her contemporaries.

Reason for the above assertion is that Tems’ music was predominantly themed around heartbreak, a trip through melancholy hill and the mental ailments that comes with trying to figure life out as a young Nigerian (African) lady. At first, her audience wasn’t perceived to be for the happy-go-lucky Afrobeats listeners who were on voraciously consumed the music projects released by vivacious charismatics such as Naira Marley, Zlatan Ibile and a host of several others.

‘Try Me’, Tems’ first major was dubbed Alte, a burgeoning music genre at the time. Listeners and the Nigerian audience didn’t think much of it, they believed she would probably be just another alternative artiste, someone who would fizzle as time transitions momentarily. Little did anyone know ‘Try Me’ would serve as the commencement of the beautiful career that awaits the leader of the Rebel Gang.

She became one of the most sensational recording artistes in the music industry and fast distancing herself from the bland Alte banner which was initially tagged at the commencement of her music journey.

Enter Wizkid; her fame was about to hit a new level when she worked with Afrobeats superstar.

In 2020, she featured on Wizkid’s smash hit, ‘Essence’ off the album, Made In Lagos. The single quickly pulsated the songstress into a new stratosphere in her music career. She began to gain international recognition and was assigned to work with several award-winning Hip Hop musicians.

On 13 August 2021, a reworked version of “Essence”, which contains an additional feature from Canadian singer Justin Bieber, was released, which propelled the song to reach number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. On 3 September 2021, Tems was featured on Canadian rapper and singer Drake’s song, “Fountains”, from the latter’s sixth studio album, Certified Lover Boy, which debuted at number 26 on the Hot 100.
