Taylor Swift makes history with Global Icon award

Taylor Swift has broken a world record with the Brits Global Icon Award this year. She is the now the first woman to be awarded the Global Icon prize. The news was announced earlier today on the Brits Award’s official Twitter handle.

“We’re excited to announce that @taylorswift13 will be presented with the BRITs Global Icon award this year!!”, the tweet read. The award gong will be handed over to Swift during the award show tomorrow, Tuesday 11 May 2021. This event will also be the first major indoor event to take place in the UK since the pandemic began.

The award organisers announced this on their official website too. They explained that the award was in “recognition of her immense impact on music across the world and incredible repertoire and achievements to date! According to the Official Charts Company, Taylor is the UK’s biggest selling artist of the year to date in 2021.”

“Taylor Swift is an eleven-time Grammy award winner and the first ever female artist to win the Grammy for Album of the Year three times. She has sold over 114 million albums worldwide with total global audio and video streams reaching 78 billion,” the statement read.

31-year-old Swift has had a great last year despite the pandemic. She released two surprise new albums in the middle of the lockdown. The Love Story singer has also been nominated in other categories in the Britz Award this year. She was nominated for the international female solo artist category for the sixth time.

According to the award organisers, Swift is the best person for the iconic award. “She is the only artist in history to have four consecutive albums sell over one million copies in their week of release (‘Speak Now’, ‘RED’, ‘1989’ and ‘reputation’), the only artist to have nine albums each sell at least half a million copies in a single week and the first and only female artist in the 21st century to score seven No. 1 studio albums in the UK!”, they write.

Taylor will also be sharing this award with the legends like David Bowie, Elton John and Robbie Williams. The award will air at 8 pm tomorrow and can be watched online on YouTube.com/BRITs.
