Seun Kuti took to social media to make his stance clear over the comments concerning fellow singer Wizkid’s Grammy. He did this in a live video on Instagram. The singer, who had indirectly asked Wizkid to stop parading himself as a Grammy nominee, maintained that Wizkid did not qualify as a Grammy winner.
Seun stated that featuring on a Grammy award-winning song does not make the person a nominee. The young musician noted that Grammy organisers called him to enter their show. When he was mocked for his comments, Seun Kuti took to Instagram live to respond to Wizkid fans.
Wizkid featured on a song with Beyonce and Blue Ivy, titled Brown Skin Girl, off the Lion King: The Gift album released in 2019. The visuals for the song received a Grammy award for Best Music Video.
Although Wizkid was recognised by the award organisers for his contribution on the track, there were arguments that he did not deserve to be awarded for a song feature.
Following the award announcement, Seun Kuti boldly announced that only four Nigerians had received Grammy nominations: Fela Kuti, Seun Kuti, Burna Boy and King Sunny Ade. According to him, because Wizkid only received a feature on the song, he did not qualify as a Grammy winner. Big Wiz was previously nominated in 2015 for featuring in Drake’s album.
Yesterday, Wizkid, who often maintains a low profile on social media, shared a photo on his Instagram story. Although he didn’t write a caption for the post, one thing was clear: he had received his Grammy statuette.
Take a look at his post here.
On the plaque, however, it was boldly written that he won the award for Best Music Video alongside Beyonce and Blue Ivy for Brown Skin Girl. This solidified his Grammy win for his collaboration with Beyonce and set the records straight.
This caused an uproar on social media. Following this subtle announcement, many fans praised the much-loved singer. Others came out to mock Seun Kuti. They called him out for saying Wizkid did not qualify as a Grammy winner.
Wizkid, however, responded to one of the posts by Seun Kuti. From his response, he holds nothing against the one-time Grammy nominee.
