Plus-size fashion Week Africa (PFWA) is yet again set to showcase the beauty of being plus-size in the African culture.

The show is billed for Sunday, December 8, 2019, at the Traffic Bar & Restaurant, Ikoyi, Lagos.

PFWA is the only fashion runway show ever dedicated to plus sized models and apparel. Beyond runway fashion, it will bring together the most promising, talented and recognized fashion designers brand and retail enterprises from across Nigeria. In addition, designers abroad will showcase trends and products to a large and diverse audience of consumers, press and fashion enthusiasts.

Hence, the PFWA team is calling on designers to showcase their designs at this year’s edition. It is going to be a haven of pop-up shops, master classes and runway shows.

The theme for the event is ‘Fahion & Nature.’

During a briefing, Mrs. Temi Aboderin- Alao, the founder said;

We have decided we are going for nature this year. Away from hotels and event center hence the choice of the venue. We want people to relax with nature and everything beautiful.”

Furthermore, Alao said the brand focuses on the African women. Hence, the need to empower them.

We would like to invite all talented plus-size designers to showcase their craft on the runway. And show every plus-sized woman that they are beautiful regardless of their body-size.

Plus-size is not a disease, but rather beautiful. You can be the healthiest version of who you are and be plus-size.

The Plus-size Fashion Week Africa was birthed out of the need to stop the stigmatization and body shaming of the plus-size woman. We believe that every woman should be comfortable in her skin and body regardless of what the society thinks as long as they are healthy,” she said.

What to Expect

In addition, Alao revealed that this year’s show will be different.

We are going to explore new things. This year, we are going to bring the models closer to the audience. The models are not sloppy, fat, but sexy fat. We want to take the way of the New York Fashion Week.

We don’t encourage people to keep growing big. You need to be healthy. We are here to promote body positivity. Be the happiest version of who you are,Alao advised.”

Very few African women are proud to be plus-sized. However there’s one musician who openly declared his love for plus-sized women. In 2013, Nigerian singer, Sound Sultan released the track ‘orobo‘. Sultan praised plus-sized African women for having a big and round bum, a song that got him a lot of commendations from plus-sized women.
