‘Outer Banks’: Creators of Hit Netflix Show Sued for Copyright Infringement

Outer banks copyright infringement

The creators of the Netflix teen TV show Outer Banks are facing legal action for copyright infringement. The action-adventure show debuted on the streaming platform back in April and has received mostly positive reviews.

Outer Banks follows a group of teenagers, John B, JJ, Kiara, and Pope; living on the barrier islands of North Carolina. The group find a clue leading to a treasure that John’s missing father had been chasing for over 20 years. The formidable teens fight hard against anything that keeps them from their treasure and the truth behind the disappearance of John’s father.

According to Variety, an author named Kevin Wooten, writer of Pennywise: The Hunt for Blackbeard’s Treasure; is suing the creators of Outer Banks, Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, for copyright infringement.

Wooten claims that his book and the television show are more than coincidentally similar. In fact, he says that the show is a complete rip-off of his book. He alleges that both stories take place in the Outer Banks; having the same plot and the same number of characters.

Wooten claims that both stories have the treasure hunters discovering similar clues during their treasure hunt. The author also believes that the show creators were in North Carolina when he was there on a tour promoting the book; hopefully proving that they had access to his material.

If what Wooten claims is indeed true, then the show will be cancelled and the plots that viewers have followed so far will never be resolved. However, Netflix has already announced the second season of Outer Banks.
