US-based filmmaker Obi Emelonye has announced the release date for Badamasi. The film is his much-anticipated biopic of a former Nigerian head of state, Ibrahim Babaginda.

The filmmaker made the announcement through his Instagram page on Friday. In the announcement, he revealed that the film will be released later this year, on June 12, 2021.

He wrote, “It’s here…finally! June 12 unravelled on June 12.”

Badamasi portrays Babangida as a man with flaws but also a deep sense of patriotism. It was shot in Lagos, Minna, Abuja, and the University of Nigeria (UNN) Nsukka.

The film features Enyinna Nwigwe as Ibrahim Babaginda alongside Charles Inojie, Sani Danja, Yakubu Mohammed, Okey Bakassi, Kalu Ikeagwu, Julius Agwu and also Erick Didie.

Synopsis

A powerful Army General attempts to guide Nigeria through a viciously strained era in this first of its kind authorised biopic.

Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (or IBB) is born in Wushishi, a small village in northern Nigeria. However, he loses both of his parents by the age of 14.

It is his charm and intelligence that would then propel him from that inauspicious beginning to the pinnacle of military politics in Africa’s most populous country.

But to fulfil his destiny, Babangida has to survive a brutal civil war, spearhead several successful military coups, escape a few ferocious plots on his own life, and confront his deepest fears.

But when fate pitches the General against the will of 150 million tough Nigerians, something has to give. Babangida has won several battles to rule Nigeria for 8 years. However, the country is on the verge of imploding. This means that he may have to lose the fight to bring her back from the brink.
