The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) has chosen CJ Obasi’s “Mami Wata” as Nigeria’s entry for the International Feature Film (IFF) category at the 96th Academy Awards.
“Mami Wata” is a black-and-white film that tells the story of a West African goddess and her diminishing influence in a struggling village.
The NOSC commended the film for its relevant theme, unique approach to pre and post-colonial African societies, and its technical and artistic excellence.
Despite facing challenges in Nigerian cinemas, the film received international recognition, including a special jury prize at the Sundance Festival.
It has also received 12 nominations for the Africa Movie Academy Awards.
