Normani: What Is Going On?

American singer Normani dropped her first solo single months ago but is yet to follow up with any new singles or an album. The hype around her is dying and we as fans need to know what is going on.

Harmonic History

Normani was a member of possibly one of the worst girl groups of all time, Fifth Harmony. Fifth Harmony was not bad per se. They delivered multiple certified pop hits. But unfortunately, they just never seemed genuine.

The chemistry between the members was never there, the hits were just fluffy generic pop songs. Fifth Harmony had little creative control during their short-lived career as a group and seemed like they were trying to tackle every demographic.

And as a group named Fifth Harmony, they barely ever harmonized in their music or as a team. Therefore, it was inevitable that the group would split, and that as soon as they did, the girls would each have their own solo careers.

The first to leave was Camilla Cabello, who is a key figure in the Latin pop movement that is going on right now. Dinah tapped into some pop/R&B. Ally has taken up pop music with some Latin flair. And Lauren is showcasing her smoky vocals singing R&B.

And then you have Normani. Last year, she became the new breakout star from the group and was cosigned by everyone from Rihanna to Nicki Minaj to Beyonce; the three most influential women in music in the 2010s.

Many people suggested that she would be next in line, which would be a smart assumption. She has enormous potential. Normani is an amazing dancer with a distinct voice that would go well with dance-pop/R&B music.

She is also a very beautiful woman with a lot of sex appeal. Normani is the entire package.

So what is going on with her music?

Normani has achieved some notably successful features this past year with Dancing with a Stranger alongside Sam Smith, Love Lies featuring Khalid, and Waves with 6lack.

A few months back, she released her debut solo single Motivation which was backed by superstars such as Ariana Grande. The video received rave reviews for her charisma and dancing.

Since then, she has had a few soundtrack appearances on Charlie’s Angels and Birds of Prey. Her most recent song with Megan Thee Stallion on the Birds of Prey soundtrack makes you wonder what her label is doing not shoving this girl up front and centre.

Normani said she would be releasing her album early this year; which we are sure has changed since because how is she going to release an album when we have not heard a peep of solo music?

She also seems like she’s trying to capture all audiences at once, which can be a bit confusing. Normani should probably be trying her own specific audience.

Everyone wants to see her win; at least I know I do. To see a young dark-skinned woman of my generation rise to superstardom would be a great thing to witness.

I don’t just understand why after five months since her debut single, she hasn’t released any more solo music. What is next for Normani? Everything just paused and sizzled out after Motivation.

Whether her or her label, whomever this may fall on, I really hope they figure it out. I do think Normani is an important figure in pop music. Her representation is extremely important for this generation; but there are some pretty big concerns with her consistency.
