Nigerian movies are now one of the most streamed films across the globe, both locally and internationally. Many people are unaware of how much revenue some of these Nollywood movies generate.

They have also received a lot of positive reviews and have pushed the country into the spotlight. It is clear that the film industry has become Nigeria’s goldmine, and we hope to see more movies topping the charts in 2021.

The Wedding Party

It’s been over four years since this movie was released. The romantic comedy was directed by Kemi Adetiba. It premiered on September 8, 2016 at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada and November 26, 2016 at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos. The film which was released worldwide on December 16, 2016 became the highest-grossing Nigerian film with ₦453,000,000, a record broken in 2017 by its sequel, The Wedding Party 2.

The film follows the wedding between Dunni Coker (Adesua Etomi), a 24-year-old art gallery owner who is the only daughter of Engineer Bamidele, and Mrs. Tinuade Coker and IT entrepreneur Dozie Onwuka (Banky Wellington,) who comes from a very wealthy family. Their wedding day was filled with chaos and the frantic reality of a wedding trying to go wrong. It’s a beautiful story, and if you haven’t seen it, you need to check it out.

This is another comedy-drama that is filled with exciting events and characters. The movie was released in 2018 and starred movie stars- Funke Akindele Bello, Kate Henshaw, Nkem Owoh, Joke Silva, Patience Ozokwor, Richard Mofe Damijo and Racheal Oniga. The movie pulled in a whopping ₦387.5 million. 

Chief Daddy follows the story of a billionaire businessman who died shockingly. He threw his family into chaos, when his wife found out he had other women and children. This is a movie that will keep you glued to your screen. 

Sugar Rush

It seems like funny movies are doing pretty well because this movie’s box office rate is ₦287 million. The production quality of this movie is also impressive.

Sugar Rush is a 2019 action-comedy. The film follows the story of three sisters, Adesua Etomi, Bisola Aiyeola, and Bimbo Ademoye.

The trio ends up with $800,000 in the house of a corrupt man, Chief Douglas, and this leads them to get noticed by the wrong people. They were always on the run, in this action-packed and hilarious film.

King of boys
Nollywood: The Biggest Box-Office Hits of All Time

King of Boys deserves all the accolades it got because the casting and production is topnotch. It is a thriller movie written and directed by Kemi Adetiba. The star of the film, Eniola Salami (Sola Sobowale), a businesswoman and philanthropist with a promising political career is thrown into a truffle for power and may have to give up everything she has worked for. The Nollywood movie pulled in a whopping ₦244 Million.

Omo Ghetto The Saga

This is easily one of the most talked-about films out of Nigeria in 2020. Omo Ghetto The Saga remains the highest-grossing film of 2020 with ₦429.2 million. 

It is an emotional comedy film co-directed by Funke Akindele and her husband, JJC Skillz. It is a sequel to the 2010 released, Omo Ghetto which follows the tale of twin sisters who were separated at birth and are leading separate lives but later become reunited by a series of dramatic twists.

Omo Ghetto The Saga shows Lefty (Funke Akindele) and her friends, Nikky (Bimbo Thomas), Busty (Eniola Badmus) and Chummy Choko (Chioma Akpotha) in Askamaya Ghetto.
