Data from Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria, CEAN show that Nigerians are likely to have spent over N266 million on 20 top films in the month of February. Although the figures gathered are for the month on February, the numbers for 4 days – February 11 to February 14 – are however omitted.
This is a drop in movie spend for Nigerians as the February gross figure, even at an average of N8.8 million daily, comes in lower than the N350 million recorded for January and the over N600 million in December.
For the first week of February, the top 20 movies in cinemas grossed a total of N68.2 million. The top three being; “Glass” with N11.4 million , “Upside” bringing in N10.4 million and “Chief Daddy” raking in N10 million.
Things switched up during the weekend – 8 to 10 of February – as “Cold Pursuit” pulled in N10.8 million, “Escape Room” grossed N7.4 million and “Upside” pulled N3.5 million.
Movie earnings jumped up during the second/third week (February 15 – 21) with a total gross figure of N89.7 million. “Alita” grossed N40.9 million, “Cold Pursuit” brought in N9.8 million and “Escape Room” grossed N8.4 million.
It is not clear yet why movie-goers didn’t indulge in their favourite hobby in the month of February but one thing is clear, our local movies are not doing badly in the cinemas.
