With a successful outing at the box office last year, the Mission: Impossible franchise has secured release dates for two follow-ups movies.

Christopher McQuarrie who assumed directorial role for 2015’s Mission: Impossible –Rogue Nation announced that Mission: Impossible 7 is scheduled for theaters on July 23, 2021, and Mission: Impossible 8 will open on Aug. 5, 2022. He hinted that both projects would be filmed back-to-back in the coming years.

For both movies, Tom Cruise will reprise his role of Ethan Hunt.

Very few films make it to a sequel, let alone becoming a franchise. Star Wars, Star Trek and Harry Potter are among the few to gain this status.

Mission:Impossible debuted in the action genre universe in 1996 with Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, an IMF agent. So far, the franchise is made up of six installments which has amassed  3.5 billion in worldwide box office sales. Last year, Mission: Impossible – Fallout raked in $791.1million in box office revenue on its $178 million production budget.
