Arese Ugwu, author and founder of Smart Money Africa has announced that she’s joining the Netflix family.
Back in 2016, Arese wrote and released a book titled, The Smart Money Woman: An African Girl’s Journey to Financial Freedom. The bestseller was also turned in a series titled The Smart Money Woman executive directed by Arese Ugwu.
The series featured a stacked cast featuring Toni Tones, Ini Dima-Okojie, Osas Ighodaro Ajibade, Lala Akindoju and Ebenezer Eno.
Arese Ugwu has now confirmed that the show has been picked up by Netflix.
The show tells the story of Zuri, on her journey to financial liberation. Along with her best friends Tami (the fashion designer), Lara (the tough oil and gas executive), Adesuwa (the conservative lawyer), and Ladun (the fabulous housewife), Zuri grows a little, learns a lot and navigates her way to making better financial decisions and building wealth.

The book and the series, tackles debt, spending, the consumerist culture of the African middle class. It also sheds a light on the fear and misconceptions surrounding money and the lack of it. The show also discusses love, friendships, cultural and societal pressures and the roles they play in success.

The author took to her Instagram page to share the news. She wrote,
“WILD!!!! It still blows my mind that this all started with a book I wrote in my pajamas!!!! And it’s even more incredible that you all watched it unfold from publishing the book, going on a Pan African book tour, the process of converting it into a Tv series. I’m so grateful guys. Thank you for riding with me. WE have a Netflix show!!!! Cheers to everyone that worked on this with me.. We did it guys!!
