Netflix has confirmed their partnership with filmmaker Kunle Afolayan to produce three movies.
Afolayan confirmed this partnership in a video he released by Kaphub, a blog he owns. The video featured a discussion between Afolayan and Ben Amadasun, Netflix’s director of content for Africa.
The filmmaker revealed that the three movies he would be producing would touch on different genres and backgrounds. According to him, the three movies fall into the historical drama, folklore fantasy, and character drama categories.
The set of all three movies is Nigeria; the first of which will be an adaptation of the third novel of Nigerian-American writer Seffi Atta titled Swallow.
Swallow is a story about a naive secretary who after a series of career woes considers her roommate’s offer to work as a drug mule in mid-1980s Lagos.
The movie will star many household names like Chioma Akpotha, Eniola Badmus, Mercy Aigbe, and Kelvin Ikeduba among others.
Expressing his excitement at the Netflix partnership, Afolayan said: “There’s never been a greater time for us; where you have so many Nigerian stories being shown to the whole world.”
Mr Amadasun also expressed his excitement as he said it would be “exciting to bring his (Kunle’s) works like The Figurine, October 1, and most recently, Citation, to our members around the world to watch.”
Kunle also produced three films – Roti, Omugwo and The Tribunal – for Africa Magic in 2017.
