Music Album: How to create a memorable debut studio project

Every record artiste wants to release a music album, a memorable one. They want to disclose how talented they are, and etch their names in the history books of creativity- the aim and objective of every artiste is to have listeners jam along to your sound, mime to your lyrics and choreograph to your intense beat or melody.

Creating a music album is beyond accumulating various songs to have a project; it’s aimed at making a sound that is memorable and relatable. Everything that the listeners want is relatability, they want a music project that they can relax and listen to one day after they come across the project, two weeks later and probably a decade later.

  1. Times and Seasons

Some seasons were designed for an artiste to emerge. It was simply the phase that the artiste needed to experience combustion and mainstream popularity. No one could take it away from them, except of course time and the transition in seasons itself. Life does happen, hence, you can wage war against it- in the early 2010s, Wizkid’s “Superstar “ ushered a new generation into the burgeoning Afrobeats music genre, his approach of music appealed to teenagers, youths at the time. They grew up to become members of the Wizkid FC gang today.

In 2012, Burna released, L.I.F.E, and he spearheaded the early phase of Alte music music. The list goes on, all an artiste needs to ‘blow’ is the right time and season. It wouldn’t be far-fetched to remind Nigerians of how Naira Marley stepped on necks back in 2019.

  1. Appeal To Listeners

In 2022, Ololade Asake came into the music industry with a refreshing sound that appealed to almost everyone. He was the top artiste on the music streaming platform, Spotify at the time following the release of his debut studio album, Mr Money With The Vibes. Asake hasn’t looked back since the music project debuted, he has gone on to release Work of Art and Lungu Boy in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

Another modern artiste who released an appealing body of work would be Omah Lay. In 2022, he released his debut studio album, ‘Boy Alone’ following the release of two impressive EPs, Gey Layd and What Have We Done?

To have a memorable music project, endeavour to have songs that appeal to the listeners.

  1. Cultural Change

Burna Boy instigated a change in how Nigerians styled and profiled themselves when he first debuted in 2012 with the singles, “Tonight” and “Love to Party”. His music influenced how teenagers and youth interpreted what it means to be cool, fashionable and trendy.

Another artiste who instigated a form of cultural change was Ice Prince, he popularized the wearing of decorated clothing such as “My money grows like weed”, the “Superman” top, and the list goes on.

A successful artiste influences culture, he/she instigates change.

Conclusion

An artiste must continue to work, focus on excellence and grind out the best. It’s impossible to explain what might make an artiste become successful, however, being genuine to one’s craft would make him stand out.

A song having replay value has nothing to do with the length of the song, jams released from the early 2000s and 90s are classics today despite the length of the songs.
