MTV to award Foo Fighters VMAs’ first Global Icon award

Foo Fighters, a Grammy winning American rock band will be the first-ever recipients of the MTV VMAs Global Icon Award.

The announcement was made by MTV on Thursday. The 2021 edition of the MTV Video Music Awards would be the first time the award would be given out.

According to the network, the Global Icon Award “celebrates an artist/band whose unparalleled career and continued impact and influence have maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond”.

The award has been a staple at MTV’s Europe Music Awards (EMAs). Some past winners of the EMAs version of the award include Queen, Eminem, U2, and Whitney Houston.

In addition to accepting the award, Foo Fighters will also perform at this year’s ceremony. This is the band’s first time on the iconic VMAs stage since 2007. In addition, the band is nominated for three other awards this year: Best Rock, Best Choreography, and Best Cinematography.

The 2021 MTV Video Music Awards is set for September 12, 2021. The ceremony will be held at the at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Also performing are Lil Nas X, Lorde, Machine Gun Kelly, Olivia Rodrigo and Camila Cabello.

On the nominations front, Justin Bieber and Megan The Stallion lead all nominees with seven and six nominations respectively. For a full list of nominees, click here.

About the Foo Fighters

In 1994, former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl founded the band as a one-man project following the dissolution of Nirvana after the death of Kurt Cobain.

The band have released 10 albums over their 27 year career, selling over 30 million albums worldwide. Earlier this year, they led the Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart for the third time.

Foo Fighters have been nominated for a Grammy award 27 times, winning 11. Their first win came in 2000 as they picked up awards for Best Rock Album and Best Short Form Music Video.
