American rapper, Meek Mill has apologised for his ‘insensitive’ lyric that references late basketball star Kobe Bryant.
Vanessa Bryant, the deceased’s wife had called out the lyricist, and criticised him, saying he was disrespectful in his collaborative song with Lil Baby.
In the “Kobe” snippet from his song that surfaced online, Meek Mill mouths the following lines, referring to Kobe Bryant’s horrible helicopter crash:
“And if I ever lack, I’m goin’ out with my chopper, it be another Kobe.”
His decision to rap about Bryant’s unfortunate demise incited a relentless wave of criticism online, with the deceased’s widow slamming the rapper as “distasteful” and highly insensitive.
“Dear @meekmill, I find this line to be extremely insensitive and disrespectful. Period. I am not familiar with any of your music, but I believe you can do better that this. If you are a fan, fine, there’s a better way to show your admiration for my husband. This lacks respect and tact,” Vanessa wrote.
In his reaction to Vanessa and his critics, Meek Mill said he has apologised to her in private.
“I apologised to her in private earlier today not to the public,” he wrote. “Nothing I say on my [Twitter] page [is] directed to an internet viral moment or the family of a grieving woman! If you care about someone grieving, change the subject!”
Bryant, a five-time NBA champion, played for the LA Lakers throughout his 20-year career and is considered one of the greatest players in the game’s history.
Last year’s January, Bryant was on his way to a tournament when the helicopter he boarded crashed into a hill. He died alongside his second-oldest daughter, Gianna who was with him.
