The longlist for the 2019 Nigeria Prize for Literature has been announced from 173 entries.
Founded in 2004, The Nigerian Prize for Literature sets out to honour literary erudition by Nigerian authors in any of the following genres; fiction, poetry, drama, and children’s literature. With a staggering prize money of $100,000 at stake every year, the Nigerian Prize for Literature is the richest prize awarded for literature in the continent.
The 2019 longlist includes; Ndidi Enenmor (A Hero’s Welcome), Jude Idada (Boom, Boom), Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani (Buried beneath the Baobab Tree), Arisa Daniel Oniko (Double ‘A’ for Adventure), Anote Ajehuorou (Goes to Farm), Dunmi Olatunde (Mystery at Ebenezer’s Lodge), Nkiru Uzoh (Obioma: A Girl’s Journey to Self-Discovery), Oladele Medaiyese (She Calls Him Daddy), Adejoh Opawale (Spurred Surprises), O.T. Begho (The Great Walls of Benin).
Previous winners of the prize include; Gabriel Okara/Ezenwa Ohaeto (2005), Ahmed Yerima (2006), Kaine Agary (2008), Chika Unigwe (2012), Tade Ipadeola (2013), Sam Ukala (2014), Abubakar Adam Ibrahim (2016), Ikeogu Oke (2017), Soji Cole (2018), amongst others.
