Nigerian filmmaker and LGBT rights activist Awhobiwom Pamela Adie is celebrating 10th anniversary of her coming out of the closet which she termed her “Freedom Day”
Taking to Facebook, she posted a throwback photo from her bridal shower. Also, she listed all her achievements since she came out as gay in 2011 to the shock of her ex-husband, family, and friends.
Check out the post below:
In the post, she talked about her marriage and divorce and the difficulties she experienced in embracing her true self. She shared the ups and downs of living as an openly gay person.
Then she talked about her film “Under the Rainbow“, which required a lot of money and effort to put together. “Under the Rainbow” is the first-ever Nigerian film abut being a lesbian.
Aide expressed choosing to be openly gay in a homophobic country made her happier than a sheltered existence with a husband ever would have.
Nigeria is vitriolic towards people who do not conform to the heteronormative ideals it stands for. However, Pamela Adie has not let any of it discourage her.
She says she has been able to live a fuller life and achieve more since coming out. Congratulations on your freedom, Pamela Adie!
