Nigerian comedienne and actress Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, popularly known as KieKie, addressed the issue of cohabitation and financial responsibilities within a marriage.
In a recent chat with Toke Makinwa, She emphasized that it didn’t align with her values for one spouse to solely bear the burden of financial responsibilities while the other enjoyed the benefits of shared living space.
She stated, “How will you be living in the house and not paying rent? For me, it does not make sense. So that when we fight, we will share everything equally. You cannot tell me get out of my house! We are living together.”
Kiekie further elaborated on her perspective, asserting that it was not in line with her principles for one spouse to bear the sole burden of rent payments while the other enjoyed shared living space. She advocated for a fair distribution of expenses within a household, encompassing bills for services such as cooking, childcare, cleaning, and dry cleaning.
Highlighting the significance of mutual respect in a marriage, she noted, “But you can decide to travel and come back and buy me a gift of 12,000 dollars, beautiful but because you have the money. I will not allow you to take all responsibility because there is respect in doing and that is another challenge in marriage.”
