South African writer, Kagiso Lesego Molope, has emerged the winner of the 2019 Pius Adesanmi Memorial Award.

The award was established by the African Studies Association of Africa (ASAA), in memory of Late Professor and writer, Pius Adesanmi, who died in the ill-fated Ethiopian Airline crash that killed all 157 passengers on board.

The ASAA notes the award was created as a reminder of Adesanmi’s commitment to teaching, research and writing excellence, courage, outspokenness and rigour.

The award celebrates an outstanding book focused on Africa or the global African world by an African author.

South African writer and graduate student at Carlton University, UK, wins the inaugural prize for her book, “Such a Lonely, Lovely Road.”

Somali writer and journalist, Hassan Ghedi Santur and Ethopian author, Sulaiman Addonia came second and third respectively, for their books, “Youth of God. Mawenzi House, 2019. (Fiction),” and “Silence is My Mother Tongue. Indigo Press, 2018. (Fiction).”
