Johnny Nash, American pop singer renowned for I Can See Clearly Now, his 1972 single has died at the age of 80.
According to Associated Press, the singer died from natural causes at his home in Houston on Tuesday.
Born on August 19, 1940 in Houston, Texas, Nash‘s career began in the 1950’s and in the 1960’s he alongside Danny Sims formed JAD Records in Jamaica. They signed Bob Marley and other members of the group called The Wailers.
According to Billboard, the reggae-influenced I Can See Clearly Now hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 4, 1972, it sold over one million copies and stayed in the top spot for four weeks. It was also awarded a gold disc by the RIAA following its release.
Johnny Nash was more popular in the UK, with his six Top 10 singles from 1968-75 including the No. 1 Tears on My Pillow in 1975.
As an actor and producer he appeared on numerous roles including Take a Giant Step (1959), Key Witness (1960) and Love Is Not a Game (1971) along with popular talk shows like The Tonight Show — both Jack Paar’s and Johnny Carson’s — and The Mike Douglas Show. He is survived by his wife Carli and son Johnny.
