John Boyega set to bring back sequel of ‘Attack the Block’

Attack the Block, the British sci-fi classic, is getting a sequel ten years after its original release. The writer and director Joe Cornish, as well as star John Boyega are making a return for the new film.

Boyega plays Moses a young South London resident who, along with his neighbours must protect their tower block from extraterrestrial invaders. Samantha, played by Jodie Whittaker (Dr. Who), and Ron is played by Nick Frost, are two of Moses’ colleagues (Shaun of the Dead).

Cornish, said in a statement Monday, “I’m thrilled we’re officially announcing our return to the world of Attack the Block on the tenth anniversary of the film’s release,”

“I can’t wait to collaborate with John once more, giving viewers a bigger slice of inner-city alien action,” he added.

Announcing the news on Instagram, the Star Wars actor wrote: “Yes Attack the Block 2 is happening! Yes I’ll be starring and producing! Yes I’m bloody excited! London VS them tings.”

After its release in 2011, Attack the Block quickly became a cult success and an internet sensation. The film, however, made waves well beyond its intended audience. It was also Boyega’s breakthrough role before he went on to lead the Star Wars franchise in the sequel trilogy.

In 2015, Cornish co-wrote the script for Marvel’s Ant-Man alongside Edgard Wright. Also in 2019, he wrote and directed The Kid Who Would Be King. Cornish has also signed on to write and direct a Starlight adaptation based on Mark Millar’s comic book.

Without a doubt, the film paved the way for both Boyega and Cornish’s careers, and fans are ecstatic at the prospect of a sequel with more funding than the first. When it is out, the film has the potential to be the next big thing in theatres.
