Davido Adeleke, Nigerian afro-pop star, better known as Davido has said that he has received permission to set up an independent evaluation panel that will oversee the retraining and redeployment of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) unit of the Nigeria Police Force.
His announcement comes after he held a meeting with the Inspector-General of police, Mohammed Adamu in Abuja on Monday, following the ongoing protest against police brutality.
While speaking to the press, Davido confirmed the disbandment of the police unit and assured that there will be “no more phone search by the police.”
“They will be brought to justice. The reform, we need to see it,” he said.
“The IG has given me the assurance and directive to set up my own independent panel that will be overseeing the redeployment of the SARS officers.
“But SARS is over. There should be no reason for us to see the police ask anyone to submit their phone. That is done.”
For a couple of days now, leading foreign celebrities, such as Big Sean, Lil Baby, Trey Songz, Drake and John Boyega have aired their concerns on their respective social media pages, demanding an end to police brutality in Nigeria while Nigerian celebrities including Falz, Runtown, Wizkid and Tiwa Savage have stormed the streets to protest.
