Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down with Oprah Winfrey in what many are calling a “bombshell interview”; and the couple have some insight into why they made the decision to step down from their royal roles.
The 2-hour interview is Prince Harry and Meghan’s first joint interview about their decision to transition out of their working roles in the royal family. The couple, who now live near Winfrey in California, completed their last official royal engagement nearly one year ago.
In a snippet of the interview, Prince Harry said his worst fear was history repeating itself. The history he is referring to is the death of his mother Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in 1997 after being ruthlessly pursued by paparazzi in Paris.
“For me, I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here, talking to you with my wife by my side,” he said. “Because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago. It has been unbelievably tough for the two of us but at least we had each other.”

In another interview, the prince said he and Meghan, who is pregnant with their second child; left a “toxic” media environment in the U.K. Prince Harry even recently won a defamation case against a U.K tabloid.
“There was a really difficult environment, as I think a lot of people saw. We all know what the British press can be like, and it was destroying my mental health,” said Prince Harry. “I did what any husband and any father would do, which was to get my family out of there.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey will air on March 7.
