Nollywood actress Hilda Dokubo has called on well-meaning Nigerians to do better when giving to charity especially during a pandemic situation like this.

The veteran Nollywood star made this known in reaction to the photo of some elderly women seen posing for the camera with one tuber of yam each.

The outspoken actress expressed the thought that it is wrong for anyone to take advantage of the vulnerable ones because of the hardship being felt due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown.

She wrote:

“What do you call this? Giving? You should never do this to anyone just because you can. It is sad when people take advantage of the vulnerable as though life has not served them enough sour juice. #coronavirus is a #pandemic not a tool!” she wrote.

She goes on to add that coronavirus is a pandemic and not a tool because we all need support. While encouraging those who can give to charity to do so, Dokubo discouraged abusing the needy through the process.

She wrote:

“We all need support and if you can give it go ahead. Do it and be grateful to God that you have been presented an opportunity to be a blessing to another person. God will truly reward you for every gift you give to the poor…the yam sure will put food in their pots…but this is not acceptable, this is not giving! #stoptheabuse #stoptheabuseofwomen.”

In similar tweets on her Twitter page on April 16, she wrote:

“The dehumanizing approach to giving this food will be our biggest undoing. Soon Unmitigated HUNGER will lead to ANGER then ANGER will drive the wheels of FRUSTRATION. Frustration will ignite AGGRESSION and aggression will trigger VIOLENCE with DIRE CONSEQUENCES for our NATION.”

Many Nigerians have lamented the harsh effects of the lockdown ordered by the federal government in some states in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Just a few weeks ago, Dokubo called on clergymen who believe that they have supernatural powers to help with the healing of those infected with coronavirus.
