The second of the ongoing Euro 2024 tournament came to a conclusion on Tuesday, July 2. The defending champions, Italy are out of the competition following their 2-0 loss against the impressive Switzerland.

Every encounter in the Euro 2024 Round of 16 contest was enthralling, however, it was the contest between Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal and Jan Oblak’s Slovenia that got everyone talking.

It can simply be described as the match of the tournament- the drama, the emotions and the sequence of the event put the entire world at the edge of their seat.

Switzerland who finished in 2nd place in Group A were able to overcome the underwhelming defending champions, Italy 2-0 in the first Round of 16 contest of the competition.

A goal in each half from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas were enough to hand Switzerland victory, with Murat Yakin’s players taking full advantage of Italy’s lethargy to set up a last-eight meeting against England.

Germany 2-0 Denmark

Goals from Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala were enough to keep the hosts, Germany going in the competition.

They defeated a lethargic Denmark 2-0 to end almost one-sided affair.

England 2-1 Slovakia

Though Slovakia took the lead through an Ivan Schranz goal in the first half, Jude Bellingham who has had a fantastic season Real Madrid was able to score a stunning overhead kick in the last minute of the encounter for the Three Lions of England.

In the extra time, England’s talisman, Harry Kane was able to secure a 2-1 for his side. The goal would in to serve as the decider for the encounter.

Spain 4-1 Georgia

Three times champions, Spain were just too much for debutants, Georgia. Despite going ahead through a Le Normand own goal, four goals from Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo was enough to quickly extinguish the hopes of Georgia.

France 1-0 Belgium

In a cagey encounter, it was a Jan Vertoghen’s own goal that ended the journey for the Red Devils of Belgium as France progressed.

Portugal 0-0 Slovenia (Portugal progressed 3-0 on penalties)

It was the match that had everyone hooked for over 120 minutes as it was concluded on penalties. Football icon, Cristiano Ronaldo broke down in tears after his penalty was saved by Slovenia’s shot stopper, Jan Oblak in the first of extra-time.

Ronaldo was able to makeup for the heart wrenching when he was able to hit his target during the routine penalty shootout.

Though Ronaldo was able to vindicate himself, it was Portuguese goalkeeper, Diogo Costa who deserved all the accolades. Prior to stopping all three Slovenia penalties during the shootout, he was able to impressively stop Benjamin Sesko’s shot following a mishap from legendary defender, Pepe.

Portugal won 3-0 on penalties. Aside from Ronaldo, Manchester United leader, Bruno Fernandez and City playmaker, Bernardo Silva were able to convert their spot kicks.

Romania 0-3 Netherlands

Austria 1-2 Turkey

Turkey’s goalkeeper, Mert makes a save against Austria

A Meril Demiral’s double was enough to help Turkey win 2-1 against Austria.

The game was the final of the Euro 2024 round of 16 clash.
