Euro 2024: Here is how it went down on match day 3

The group stages of the ongoing tournament, Euro 2024 has come to a conclusion. The competition is gradually taking shape as eight teams have been eliminated from the competition and there are sixteen teams left.

In this article, we would be looking at how the events in the various groups came to a conclusion.

Group A

The German national team won Group A

Scotland suffered a 5-1 defeat in the opening day of the competition to the host, Germany. They went on to play a 1-1 draw against Switzerland, before a last minute goal saw them lose 1-0 to Hungary.

As Germany tops the group, as Switzerland finished in second. Hungary’s 1-0 win again Scotland was too little too late. Both teams are out of the competition.

Group B

How Group B finished

Spain is the only team that emerged from the group stages with maximum points. They defeated in the teams in the group, leaving Italy, Croatia and Albania to fight for the scraps.

Italy finished in second place after a 1-1 draw against Croatia. The defending champions will be in the Round of 16.

Group C

Here is how Group C finished

Group C produced the fewest amount of goals in the competition. A total of seven (7) goals were scored among the four teams in the group.

England finished atop with 5 points, while Denmark and Slovenia 3 points each. Serbia finished in 4th place, hence, the are out of the competition.

Group D

How Group D finished

Ralf Ragnick’s Austria finished in first place, ahead of heavyweights, France and the Netherlands. Austria defeated Netherlands 3-2 to clinch first place as France and Poland settled for a 1-1 draw.

Austria clinched 6 points while France had 5, then the Netherlands settled for 4 points. Poland were already eliminated since match day 2.

Group E

How Group E finished

Perhaps the most exciting group in the competition as every team settled for 4 points and the qualification had to be decided via goal difference.

Romania finished in first place courtesy of their 3-0 win over Ukraine on the opening day of the competition; Belgium and Slovakia finished in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Group F

Here is how Group F ended

Haven’t for the next round of the competition, Portugal suffered a 2-0 loss against Georgia who were registering their firstever win at a major competition. Portugal finished as group leaders despite the result, as Turkey emerged 2-1 winners in the fiercely contested match against Czechia.

The contest between Turkey and Czechia match saw 18 yellow cards and 2 red cards, a record.
