Mohammed Adamu, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has revealed what he discussed with popular singer, Davido, with whom he had a meeting with yesterday (Monday, September 12, 2020).
As reported on eelive.ng, Davido met with the IGP as the ongoing #EndSARS nationwide protest continued despite the announcement of the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
Revealing what was discussed during the meeting, Adamu said he had informed Davido that the training of a new police unit to take over over from SARS, will begin next week.
With the scrapping of SARS, Adamu made known that he told Davido that there was a need to get a new structure to carry out the duties of the defunct police unit, which is fighting violent crimes.
While assuring the music star that the new outfit would be intelligence-driven, properly trained, and only act on special occasions that require their attention, the IGP explained that the unit will be made up of fresh personnel with a fresh orientation and not officers from the scrapped unit.
He however promised that opportunities would be created for members of the public to participate in and make inputs to the formation of the new unit.
“We just disbanded (SARS) yesterday (Sunday), so protesters should calm down and give us time to fix the problem. The general public will be part of the process of getting a new outfit.
“I’m talking to you so, I will keep talking to many others and get civil societies involved and get their input towards the new unit,” Adamu stated.
On the issue of compensation to the families of those wronged by SARS, Adamu promised that it would be addressed when investigations were concluded. “We want justice to be done and justice will be done,” he said.
For a couple of days now, leading foreign celebrities, such as Big Sean, Lil Baby, Trey Songz, Drake, and John Boyega have aired their concerns on their respective social media pages, demanding an end to police brutality in Nigeria while Nigerian celebrities including Falz, Runtown, Wizkid and Tiwa Savage have stormed the streets to protest.
Meanwhile, Davido has disclosed that the IGP has given him permission to set up a SARS redeployment panel.
According to the music star, the panel will oversee the retraining and redeployment of the proscribed SARS operatives.
