In the blockbuster movie Spider-Man, the uncle of the lead character, Ben Parker made a powerful statement to his teenage niece, Peter Parker, he said, “with great power comes great responsibility”. It was the final conversation he had with Peter (otherwise known as Spiderman) before he was murdered later that night.

Whoever wants to be in power must first understand that they have the responsibility to serve and to honor the wellbeing their wards. The aim and objective of being in power isn’t only to occupy a position; it is to show competence, accountability and responsibility towards the wellness of his/her subordinates.

Albeit, in this part of the world, the aim and objective of those in power is to deny the common man the opportunity to enjoy the basic necessities of life, instead, they unapologetic squander public funds and make policies that further annihilates hope or the opportunity for the common man to make something worthwhile.

On Thursday, August 1, the common man took to the streets to show that he has had enough and is prepared to take back his country.

The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest commenced on Thursday, August 1 across various states in Nigeria. The aim is to express how the common man has been unable to do something in the recent regime due to the nefarious policies propounded by the statesmen, the elites and leaders of the country.

Prior to the commencement of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, the prices of commodities have skyrocketed in the marketplace making it tedious for the common people to acquire basic goods. The average Nigerian who resides in a modest neighborhood witnessed how inflation disallowed him to get some necessities such as food, home accessories, etc. The common man struggles to make ends meet while he drowns in debt and battles inflation on a daily basis.

The protest was inevitable, it has been looming, the brokenness in the hearts of Nigerians cannot be explained in text, it experienced; first, it is exhausting, then it is even more infuriating when the leaders of the nation are apathetic towards the wellness of her citizens. They have maintained indifference and sent threats, demeaning the relevance of the people who voted them into power.

Our Insensitive Leaders…

On Wednesday, July 31, the senate president, Godswill Akpabio one day prior to the commencement of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest made a derogatory statement at the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities, Youths and Women Group Sensitisation Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

“All of us feel the impact of what is happening now. But we are aware it will be for a short while,” he said, apparently referring to the current economic hardship in the country.

The senate president then corroborated Mr Ogbuku’s comments that the people of the Niger Delta were not interested in a change of government in Nigeria.

“Managing Director, I want to thank you for what you said. You said we are not interested in regime change; let us own this government.

Those who want to protest can protest, but let us be here eating,” Mr Akpabio remarked.

Mr Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, is known for often making controversial remarks over serious national issues.

Expectedly, Nigerians were furious at the senate president’s remark and asked for him to be more reverent in issues affecting the common people of Nigeria.
