Alexandrian writer Noor Naga, wins the 2019 Graywolf Press African Prize for her first novel manuscript, “American Girl and Boy from Shobrakheit.”
Founded in 1974 by Scott Walker, Graywolf Press is a nonprofit literary publisher and a leading independent publisher committed to the discovery and energetic publication of twenty-first century American and international literature, based in the United States.
The Graywolf African Prize is an award set aside to encourage and promote literary works of African origin. Noor Naga will receive an advance of $12,000 and 66th and 2nd will publish the book in Italy. . A section of the winning manuscript was recently published in Granta as the winner of the 2019 Disquiet Fiction Prize.
The judge, Igoni Barret had this to say about the manuscript; “American Girl and Boy from Shobrakheit seethes with metaphoric passion and emotional intelligence beneath its pie crust of metafictional playfulness, and will reward every rereading with new doses of pleasure.”
The winning manuscript “American Girl and Boy from Shobrakheit,” chosen by Judge Igoni Barrett inconjunction with Graywolf editors, would be published in 2021 by Graywolf Press.
