Music executive, Efe Omorogbe has signed a petition to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, seeking a redress of the death sentence against singer Yahaya Sharif-Aminu.
Recall that last month (August 2020), eelive.ng reported that Sharif-Aminu, was sentenced to death by hanging under the Sharia laws of Kano.
Judge Khadi Aliyu Muhammad Kani of a Sharia court in the Hausawa Filin Hockey area of the state, found the 22-year-old guilty of blasphemy.
Signing the petition on behalf of The Nigerian Music Industry Collective which consists of Juju music legend, Ebenezer Obey, music executive Audu Maikori, film director Dare Fasasi, founder and CEO of Storm 360 Obi Asika, amongst others, Omorogbe pleaded with the governor to implement the rule of law which has been unfairly disregarded in the singer’s case.
His petition reads: “Your Excellency sir, we have been informed that Yahaya has been scheduled to be executed in less than a week, and we will like to appeal to you to use your good office to influence the implementation of the rule of law, which has obviously been disregarded in this case.
“Yahaya Sharif-Aminu is protected under the law which gives him freedom of thought, conscience and religion, and protecting freedom of expression.
“We, as leaders of the Nigerian music and entertainment industry, are absolutely against this attempt to gag free thinking and expression and ask that justice is served by the overruling of this sentence and the dropping of all charges against him.
“We ask that you use your good offices to stop this act and release him from this unfair act.”
