Ed Sheeran, Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter, has opened up about what it’s like working with hip hop megastar, Eminem.

In an interview with Apple Music, Sheeran recalled his first meeting with the rapper and how they spent hours talking about their shared love for Marvel and the Avengers. According to him, they only began making music during their second meeting.

“It was in Detroit and I was playing a gig in Detroit,” Sheeran said. “And yeah, I arrived at his studio. He has got loads of games consoles there. He loves games. I actually bought him a Nintendo 64 with GoldenEye on it as a gift. Yeah. I just stepped in there.”

“Actually, the first time we met, we did not make music. I hung out there for about four hours, and we just spoke Marvel and Avengers for about four hours and then the next time I went back, we made a tune. The first tune we made, I was in Mexico and his producer flew to Mexico, and I did the hook there and stuff.” He continued.

Before eventually meeting Eminem, Ed Sheeran discussed turning down an invitation by ace producer, Rick Rubin to meet the rapper years ago. According to him, he has a personal rule about meeting his musical inspirations. His rule, “never ever meet your heroes unless they want to meet you”.

“I said, ‘No, I want to get the point where Eminem wants to meet me'”, Sheeran said he told Rubin.

Ed Sheeran and Eminem have now worked on three songs together. The duo teamed up on “River” from Eminem’s 2017 album Revival as well Remember the Name from Sheeran’s 2018 No. 6 Collaborations Project and more recently on Those Kinda Nights from the Music to Be Murdered By album released by Eminem in 2020.
