Don Jazzy: I should have signed Falz, Teni when I had the chance

Don Jazzy signed

Mavin Records boss Don Jazzy says he wishes he signed artistes Falz, Teni, and Simi when he had the chance.

Don Jazzy revealed this in his BlackBox interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu after the host asked him if he had any regrets. While he rejects any notion that they are regrets, Don Jazzy says he wishes he had signed Falz, Simi and Teni when he had the chance.

The music mogul said he wanted to sign Falz, but unfortunately, Falz’s existing management contract came in the way of that. In his words, “The working situation wasn’t right. I run a company that could handle almost everything that he would need. But then I think he had like a management company set up already… [With Tiwa] I had to grow into [handling an artist that was already signed to a contract].”

Back in 2012, Simi participated in a Twitter competition Don Jazzy hosted. Speaking on it, he said, “I really loved her, I really loved her cover of the song. She didn’t win the competition, but she was high up there. In the house, I didn’t pick the winner. I had certain people join hands to pick the winner. I liked her, but you can’t sign everybody.”

Concerning Teni, Don Jazzy said he used to check up on her when she was schooling in the US. Jazzy says, “I wasn’t in a situation to bring her from Atlanta to Nigeria and start working. Now, I can move [any artist] from wherever they are in the world… Before I knew what was happening, I think there were people that were faster and closer to her and she put out some records. I was like okay, ‘Lost that one.'”

Don Jazzy also says that he could have signed Davido. Although he joked that Davido’s wealthy background was the reason he didn’t sign the DMW boss.
