Tanzanian artist Diamond Platnumz just released the video of his new track “Baba Lao”. The video of the track is an energetic display of street dance.
But that’s not the first thing you notice… “Baba Lao” by Diamond Platnumz sounds just like Naira Marley’s “Soapy”
Nasibu Abdul Juma, popularly known as Diamond Platnumz, sampled the beat of “Soapy” for his new song. The production by Rexxie is unmistakable and fans can clock it from the first note.
So it is not surprising that once the Tanzanian Bongo Flava artist dropped the song, fans in the comments went “Soapy?” On the other end, fans under the “Soapy” commented that they were there after hearing “Baba Lao”.
Indubitably, Diamond Platnumz struck a gold mine when he heard “Soapy”, because his video received over a million views within 24 hours of its release.
Naira Marley’s “Soapy” was a controversial hit when it came out in August. The song featured lyrics promoting masturbation and paired it with a scandalous dance.
But the song was so good that it made a lot of people come out of the closet as Marlians. Since then Naira Marley has been making waves, regardless of what scandals he involves himself in. He even made an appearance at Wizkid’s concert at the O2 Arena
For this song, Diamond Platnumz adapts Rexxie’s beat to the T and infuses elements of makossa and bongo flava into it. The beat fits perfect and we’re glad Nigerians are inspiring other Africans to make good music.
Check out the two songs and see how Diamond Platnumz adapted the beat.
